Soul of Istanbul 2010

- A love letter to the city on the Bosporus --

Byzantium-Constantinople-Istanbul, the urban center of the Eastern Roman Empire, later under the Ottomans, Istanbul became the bridge between East and West, Europe and Asia.
For about 2000 years there was a fruitful collaboration and coexistence of all races, cultures and religions.

Later, from 1453 on, after the conquest of Constantinople by Sultan Mehmet II, Christians, Jews andMuslims became citizens and servants of the Ottoman Sultans.

Almost at the same time, the Jews and Muslims were expelled from Spain (under Alphonso the Wise) because of the Rekonquista and the Inquisition - the end of the coexistence of the 3 world religions in Europe.

As a result, Istanbul is not only the center of the imperial Ottoman rulers, but also the cultural epicenter of the East.

Musicians and poets, whether Persians, Arabs, Greeks, Armenians, Indians or Jews - they all are equally welcome at the court of the sultans. And such a charming, tuneful amalgam comes into flower. If there is a prime example of interfaith and multicultural exchange, then it's Istanbul, the vibrant city that combines these attributes.

Istanbul, European Capital of Culture 2010, is the historical and cultural connection and link between Europe and Asia.

It's the motto for the production of Soul of Istanbul: a touch of Orient with Western beats. Sounds that reflect the soul of this fascinating city.

Alaturka Records

While the technology develops, our music after phonograph records has been transformed into a shape that has lower quality compared to the past.

The real Turkish music has lost its popularity as it disappeared and it has become a kind only listened by certain people.

Therefore, we had to come together and started recording our own music which is inspired by the music on the phonograph records and its unforgettable singers and instrumentalists. Through this, we aimed at preparing an archieve that will be left for the true music lovers of the future.

We do wish to imitate the past; however, we would like to make music with the spirit of the past.

Our core group will reach out to new musicians all around, share its experiences and get bigger and bigger...
